We believe in fun and fantasy, (you can"t be too serious all the time), and try to remember that, when creating our artwork. Our masks are suitable for Mardi Gras, Burning Man, theatre, Halloween, masquerade parties or decoration and will make an excellent addition to any collection. But most of all, they are to be enjoyed. Each mask is unique. Due to the nature of leather, each piece reacts differently to the process. Even when trying to recreate a mask, it will be slightly different, making each piece truely unique.
The technique that we use to make our masks comes from Renaissance Italy. The original street performers, called "Commedia Players" would perform in town squares. Stereotyped postures and masks designated easily recognized characters. This allowed a small group to perform from the back of their wagon.
Our masks are made of vegetable tanned leather to minimize the level of toxins near your face. We use leather known as English Kip. The wet leather is tied onto a sculpted face (traditionally wood - ours are plaster). After securing the leather, the excess is folded, bent, stretched, pinched or otherwise shaped. When the leather dries, it retains this shape. The leather is then painted, sometimes wet and sometimes dry, depending upon the effect desired. The back of the mask is sealed to protect the leather. When the sealer has dried, the front is waxed. The last steps are to buff the mask to a nice shine, add ornamentation and ties.
We welcome any and all custom design orders for masks, paintings, jewelry or costumes. PLEASE ENJOY...
